CASE STUDY

The Future of St. Nicholas Shopping Centre.

The project.

The London Borough of Sutton sought to engage young people aged between 13-18 regarding the future of the St. Nicholas Shopping Centre site to be redeveloped into a mixed-use site with housing and culture and community spaces.

Our role.

In partnership with the London Borough of Sutton, ECF conducted:

  • A workshop with 17 participants aged 13 to 18, with attendees recruited through the Council’s community partners to gather their feedback. The ECF team led the session, beginning with an icebreaker activity, during which pizza, drinks and snacks were provided.
  • In the first activity, participants were encouraged to think broadly about their experiences and use of the area surrounding St. Nicholas Shopping Centre. Using interactive materials, young people were able to map the area, share how they felt about specific locations, and suggest improvements.
  • Top Trump cards were then used in the second activity as a game which allowed young people to rate and discuss five existing community spaces across different categories: food, social, sports, community, and culture. They evaluated each space on three key indicators: need, suitability, and inclusivity.
  • To recognise their participation, all 17 young people received certificates of participation, refreshments, and a £20 Love2Shop voucher, enhancing the social value impact of the project.

Outcomes.

Our comprehensive engagement process culminated in a detailed report for the London Borough of Sutton, which captured the feedback of the young people involved in the workshop. This report not only informed the emerging proposals but also ensured that the future plans reflected the needs and aspirations of young people in the area.
